Monday, March Sixteenth
We both slept in this morning, because my Mom wore earplugs to block out the dogs barking, and I slept right through the noises. We went downstairs for some breakfast, and my Mom made the two eggs we got from the egg gathering room yesterday.
This morning
we plan to finish journaling, then go out, hopefully to see Katie’s quilt shop
and the cows. Later on, we will most likely drive to Lancaster.
We did
indeed get to meet the cows today, as well as their horse! One of their dogs,
Trina, followed us into the barn. Unsure of whether or not she could be in the
barn (Katie later informed us it was okay), we spent the first ten minutes just
trying to get her out of the barn. She so badly wanted to come back in, and
kept opening the heavy barn door with her nose.
Trina is a
hilarious, sweet dog, who always wants our attention and will scratch her paw
on the ground if you pet her in the right spot. It’s so funny looking!
The cows
were adorable, of course, though a bit rowdy. They continued to smash their
massive heads through the fence, and fling them up and down. Some of them were
extra cute and posed to have their photographs taken!
After we
visited with the cows for a fair amount of time, we went on a walk down the
road toward the Mennonite church we visited yesterday. The scenery was
beautiful, and we got a few pictures of other Amish farms and houses along the
way, with their line-dried clothes blowing in the wind. After our walk, we ate
our leftover pizza for lunch before heading out to Lancaster.
While driving through one area of Lancaster, we were surprised by the many town homes and town shops. It wasn’t until we used my GPS to find a bakery that we actually saw any Amish people in Lancaster.
The bakery we went to was okay, but definitely not the best choice we could have made considering how many authentic Amish sweet shops and bakeries there are. The employees appeared to be rather lazy, and they were out of several things that were on the menu. We ended up getting ice cream, which was good.
After getting
ice cream, we drove around for quite a while and ended up eating supper while
we were there, at a nice family restaurant. We also picked up a couple things
for tomorrow’s breakfast at a local shop that normally sells a lot of their
own produce during the right seasons. It was a cute shop run by Mennonites,
called Kauffman’s Fruit Farm and Market. The blueberry bread and fresh ground
peanut butter we purchased looks really good.
We headed back to the guesthouse and chatted with Katie for a while, then gave hugs and said our goodbyes, just in case we don’t see her before we leave early tomorrow morning. We didn’t see Chris today, but we did get to meet one of their daughters, Kathryn. She was so sweet, and chatted with us while hanging their clothes on the line.
We also
visited Katie’s quilt shop, which had tons of beautiful things in it. We were
going to buy their family cookbook, but she wasn’t there when we went back in
to buy it.
