A Night at Our Nation's Capitol

Sunday, March 8

After our supper at Johnny Rockets, we decided to head over to the Capitol. On a trip like this, there is never really enough time at any one stop so we wanted to make good use of our time. Our feet were beyond tired from all of the walking so, having an all-day Metro pass in our pockets, we took the subway as close as it would take us to the Capitol. Once up the long, long escalator, we walked down darkened streets to the Capitol grounds. Coming around a corner onto First Street, there it was before us, glowing through the trees.

As we walked closer we could see the extensive scaffolding surrounding the dome that is in place for the restoration of the dome. www.aoc.gov/dome/facs

Pulling out our telephoto lens, we checked out the intricate details.

The Statue of Freedom stood out almost ghost-like on the top.  http://www.aoc.gov/capitol-hill/other-statues/statue-freedom

A couple of policemen stood talking out front so we stood back and quietly took it all in. The night was so peaceful. Other than one jogger and a handful of selfie-takers, we had the giant courtyard to ourselves.

With such a huge building its hard to appreciate all the amazing details. It was neat to be able to zoom in and see some of the artwork in the gables, etc.

As it was late and getting cold, we decided to leave, but first I went up to the police and talked to them a few minutes about the beautiful evening and the Capitol building. And then, it was back to the subway and to our hotel.

  1. I love telephoto lenses. It means you can get some really special shots without being invasive and no one around you is bothered. The closeups of the details on the dome are something we would never see otherwise. You would be a powerful spy! lol
