Sirens scream, taxis honk as they fly impatiently through the
intersection of 14
th & H Street NW. I lean on the
cold metal windowsill of our room, 12 floors above the street.
Above, a few stars shine in the night sky, and far below, bundled
head to toe, people rush by on their way to somewhere. In twos and
threes they go, skirting piles of dirty snow; too impatient to wait
for a walk signal, they dodge between the quickly moving cars. A
nearby church bell gongs the hour. Another ambulance flies by, a
helicopter briefly hovers close then lifts off into the night.

I am definitely not a city girl but I enjoy seeing how others
live. It amazes me to look down and see all the people. Many of
them live and work here. Their kids go to school here, they buy
groceries here and cook dinner. They take trains, buses and subways
to get to where they need to go. Many probably don't even own a car.
We will enjoy this slice of life in the city for a few days wait for
each crosswalk signal before we cross.

Amy you are such a wonderful writer. You are so aware what is around you. It is such a joy to read your blog. You remind me of your mom and trip we took together and she wrote it all out and planned it with us before we left.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Debbie! Yes, my mom is really good at planning things and is a great writer as well! Which trip was that? I do remember at least one trip with your family.
