On this cloudy May Day, as I stuff the last few things in my bag, and attempt to stuff some of the "cares of this life" aside, I ponder the journey that lies ahead. All but one are familiar routes, but the travels will, of course, be different. As with all forms of travel, there will be times of peace, excitement, inspiration, and trouble. That's the world that we live in. Things will go wrong, and it's how we handle them that matters.
On the map below I've marked out my route for this trip in yellow. Some will be traveled in both directions. The only route new to me on this trip is from NYC to Chicago. Called The Lakeshore Limited, it is said to be one of the most beautiful routes in the system. The downside is that I'll be boarding in the afternoon, and riding much of the route in the dark.
The routes marked in purple are those I've traveled on other trips, either alone, or with some of my kids. Each was a unique adventure with lasting memories.
I've often said that you can travel by train if you need to get somewhere, but it's really more about going somewhere. The impetus for this trip was a visit to St Simon's Island, off the coast of Georgia, but the trip is about so much more than the destination.
Happy Travels!
