#13 Live Oak Cottage, My Home Away From Home

 May 8 - 12, 2023

After just one night in Savannah, I checked out of Planters Inn, but was able to store my luggage there so I could still walk around.  In the afternoon I got an Uber to the Savannah airport, which is really in the city of Pooler, where I had a rental car reserved.  Due to awful service, it took a half hour just to get to the counter and then an hour to get the car.  All's well that ends well, so I'll try not to dwell on that poor beginning.

Once out of the lot I set my GPS for St Simons Island.  By then, traffic was much heavier, but I arrived at my little cottage by 6:00.  Quickly unloading, I drove the few miles to Winn-Dixie for a few groceries.  As soon as I got back I threw together a sandwich to eat outside.  I hadn't seen or heard any mosquitoes, but to be on the safe side, I spritzed myself with a little natural repellant that I'd brought.  Apparently St Simons mosquitoes are silent, and rather partial to lemongrass oil.  Four days later, I still have large swollen bites.  Never too old to learn I guess.  Thankfully, my hosts had an entire bathroom cabinet full of various big-gun bug sprays.

Live Oak Cottage is a cozy retreat for up to 2 people.  The hosts live in the big house that's off to the left of the photo.  It's a large sweeping corner lot that's minimally landscaped, but naturally beautiful.  The main characteristic being the massive live oak trees that tower over everything.

I love mornings, especially if I am not required to do much very early.  I like to step outside, still in my pajamas, greet the day, and think about what I want to do.

Then I make a cup of coffee and sit out and relax.  Here the birds are singing, and the nearby church bells are ringing.  There are no real fences between any of the lots, and a variety of cats wander about from house to house, paying no mind to the numerous squirrels skittering up and down the trees.

Meadows Drive is a long dead-end road.  All the lots are large, and houses older, but well kept.  There were no fancy pools, but several had what appeared to be ponds.  The marsh comes right up to the road in a couple of areas, so perhaps they just dug it out a bit to create a pond.  In the morning, during the cooler hours, all the neighbors were out walking their dogs, and seemed really friendly.  All in all, it was a lovely place to call home, with all the amenities of home, and none of the work.

I didn't really cook, but made all of my meals at the house.  They had a small cooler to take picnic lunches with when I went to the beach. Suppers I ate out in the front after I was well doused with bug spray.

Due to the dense foliage, there wasn't much of a sunset, but from this spot I could watch the golden light slowly slip away behind the dripping moss.

Today I checked out promptly at 11:00, and since I hadn't been making cooked breakfasts, I was craving a good southern breakfast.  I found just what I wanted down by the pier.  A small hometown café that looked to be a local hangout.  Cheesy grits, bacon, eggs and a biscuit with marmalade.  Yum.
